Christmas in Brisvegas

Christmas in Brisbane was…. Weird. My whole life living in the UK you are raised to associate Christmas time with cold weather, winter, snow, big roast dinners, warm drinks, etc. So it was very strange to find myself celebrating Xmas in the summer, in the heat, and trying to garner some crimbo spirit whilst lying on the beach.

We decided to stay in Brisbane and celebrate just the two of us and T’s brother instead of flying back to Victoria to his family. T was very sweet and suprised me one day having decorated the house with lights, hung stockings, and laid Xmas crackers everywhere in an attempt to raise my spirits. I soon dampened his by forcing him to watch back to back Xmas movies!

On Christmas Eve we went into the city and watched the Gold Lotto Brisbane City Light Spectacular which was projected onto the city hall. Hundreds of people gathered on the balmy evening and watched as the story of the nutcracker was beamed onto the building – watching all the kids faces was so cute.

Christmas Day consisted of waking up and opening pressies (gorgeous diamond solitaire earrings for me, lucky lady), then cooking our Aussie style Christmas lunch. as there was just 3 of us we kept it simple. Started with platters of meats and cheese (and the obligatory bottle of bubbles). Then for main we had homemade potato salad, broccoli salad, actual salad, sausage and cooked ham. Dessert was pavlova made by me!

The day turned Into a bit of a blur of excessive eating and drinking so there were some similarities to a British Christmas! I facetimed home in the evening and blubbed for a while before falling into bed in preparation for doing it all again for Boxing Day!

For New Year’s Eve we kept it simple and went for dinner in the city before watching the fireworks from south bank. Dinner was at Gambaro on Caxton Street. We had heard great things about this seafood restaurant and whilst the food was good, the service was slow and we had finished our meals by the time some drinks had arrived! Then we grabbed a cab to south bank and had some more drinks whilst watching the fireworks which were awesome.
